Reflection of Project: 517
February 21, 2010
I have been observing and recording data on my student using the ABC behavior analysis form. I thought this would be best because my student exhibits behavior that have a variety of cause and effects. I am interested to see if there is a pattern between cause behavior and effect or consequence of behavior. I am hoping this form will show me a pattern in the relationship between the cause, behavior, and consequences of the behavior. My goal is to help my student understand the reasons for the consequences and develop skills to control his behavior to decrease the amount of time spent dealing with the consequences. So far I am just recording and observing behavior and reflecting on the possible reasons for behavior.
It sounds like we’re kind of at the same point in our plan. It is very important for our students to understand the consequences and connections between their behaviors. Sometimes assigning jobs to your student can help them place emphasis on other tasks and possibly help them focus their attention on their school work and following directions. I have also learned a lot from other teachers, so use your resources!
I am in the same boat as you, and I am using the same behavior form. My student refuses to follow expectations and then has a “fit” (or cries and has a tantrum) when she has to complete a behavior form. She repeats that she will “get in so much trouble if mom sees the form” but I feel like she wants attention so much that she is willing to be apathetic and not complete her work or she is willing to act out so that even if she is punished, she is still receiving attention…. it gets exhausting as a teacher to deal with her behavior every 2 minutes. I wish that this problem had an easy solution.
I have started taking time to praise her good work and to remind her that I am proud of her when I see her following the expectations. That worked well this past Friday.
The other students seem a bit confused as to why she is always disrupting class or causing a scene but I might have a chat with them at some point about her if it gets much worse…
Ahh so I just realized that I haven’t been posting to your blog…oops! I definitely agree with Jordan about assigning jobs to your students. I’ve started that with a couple of my students and it definitely has helped them feel more responsible and it holds them accountable for their actions. I have never heard of an ABC analysis form, but it definitely sounds like something I need to look at! Hope your teaching is going well =)
